VESPER BOOKS + WINE
CLIENT: VESPER
LOCATION: DETROIT, MI
YEAR: 2024
Vesper transforms a historic bank building in Detroit into a bar, wine shop, and bookstore focused on hospitality.  Blending the bank’s original pink marble and plaster with warm woods, rich textures, and hand-painted accents, the space becomes a textural feast.

Built in collaboration with local craftspeople, the millwork is centered on an organically curved bar with a bold yellow backdrop that draws you in. Faced with custom tambour-inspired oak paneling and topped with eco-friendly wood-chip terrazzo counters, the bar brings layers of pattern to the design. Custom radiused plywood wine and book shelving mirrors the playful shape of the bar, while geometric tiered retail tables display a variety of offerings. Locally sourced bar stools from feature painted steel legs and white oak seats, mirroring the cadence of the bar’s patterned structure.

Clusters of vintage furniture complete the cozy living room vibe, inviting visitors to stay a while. Visitors can perch at one of the historic marble check signing counters, repurposed as reading ledges, to flip through their new favorite cookbook, then grab a glass and some friends to head to the vault, reimagined as a private lounge featuring velvet benches, curtains, and built-in speakers. The historic safe, steel vault door, and gold accents play against the deep greens saturating the walls and seat cushions, bringing elements of the past to life.
